This in essence is an inferior Starly, but with higher (for the most part not useful) defenses. Pidgey also doesn't have as much Speed as Starly. Still, Brave Bird and Return are both extremely powerful attacks when factoring in STAB and their high base power, only leaving Squirtle to really resist either of them. Quick Attack hits Combee, Starly, Cyndaquil, Poochyena after a Quick Feet boost and Feebas, who all outspeed this Pidgey, although almost none of them are OHKOed. Life Orb is the preferred item here, as it gives Pidgey a lot more versatility, with the only setbacks being that Pidgey has a lower chance of OHKOing the standard Togepi with Stealth Rock up if it uses Brave Bird, and gives Pidgey a much higher chance of OHKOing Feebas with Quick Attack after Stealth Rock damage, muscling an 87% chance when factoring in Stealth Rock damage. Using a Choice Band for this purpose means Pidgey will appreciate Rapid Spin support significantly more.

The selling point with this set is that it completely surprises foes who normally would stay in and attempt to KO Pidgey, only to be met with Brave Bird or Return for a surprise KO. These foes include Feebas, Cyndaquil, Combee, Starly, Poochyena after a Quick Feet boost, Pichu, Hoppip and Zubat. Quick Attack on this set should only be used when Pidgey is faced with another priority attacker (especially Shinx), but it should be noted that it will only deal at most 21% to a 252 / 0 neutral Squirtle, meaning Aqua Jet coming from it will in almost all cases prevail. When using this set, it is wise to U-Turn out as Pidgey's first attack, which will give you a good idea on what the foe packs that is being used to counter Pidgey so that they don't switch back to it later on. Without the foe keeping their usually-faster 'counters' to Pidgey in, this set becomes less usable, especially if they discover that Pidgey is Choiced.

168 Speed is needed on this set to outspeed a maximum Speed Feebas to KO it with nearly any of Pidgey's attacks. Although not recommended, a drop to 112 Speed allows Feebas and Magikarp to outspeed Pidgey, but still allows for it to outspeed and KO a maximum Speed Combee. Albeit weathering Squirtle's Aqua Jet, the switch has little use, however.

Team Benefit squirtle

In plain terms, Starly outclasses Pidgey as a physical sweeper with both its higher Speed and Attack power. Pidgey has slightly higher Special Defense and Defense stats, but they rarely make a difference between a 3HKO or a 2HKO, making the small increase relatively useless. As with Starly, Pidgey highly appreciates Rapid Spin support, especially the Choice Scarf set. This makes Squirtle a very useful teammate, although you will have to consolidate the Electric weakness that comes with it.

Counters shinx squirtle

Shinx has just enough Defense to take any one attack that Pidgey can throw at it in time for it to retaliate with a STAB Thunder Fang or Spark, which will both end Pidgey. Squirtle has enough Defense to take anything Pidgey has, and can hit with a STAB Aqua Jet for a 2HKO, or use Ice Punch.
